Basic Meaning: Vinītaprabha

  • Chinese translation of the name, which is transcribed as 毘膩多鉢臘婆. He was a north Indian prince with whom Xuanzang 玄奘 studied for fourteen months in India. He wrote commentaries on Vasubandhuʼs 世親 Pañcaskandhaka-prakaraṇa and Triṃśikā (neither extant). Among the texts Xuanzang studied with him are Sthiramatiʼs 安慧 Abhidharmasamuccaya-vyākhyā 對法論 (tr. by Xuanzang as 大乘阿毘達磨雜集論 T 1606 in 646 CE, a year after returning to China);  Saṃghabhadraʼs 僧伽跋澄 Revealing the Tenets of the Abhidharma-piṭaka 顯宗論 (a critique of Vasubandhuʼs Abhidharmakośa-bhāṣya, tr. by Xuanzang as 阿毘達磨藏顯宗論 T 1563 in 651–52 CE),  and Dignāgaʼs Nyāyamukha 理門論 (tr. by Xuanzang as 因明正理門論 T 1628 in 650).  〔大唐大慈恩寺三藏法師傳 T 2053.50.232a27〕 [Dan Lusthaus; source(s): T2053]
