Basic Meaning: Morotake Ekidō

Senses:

  • (1805–1879) A Japanese Sōtō school 曹洞宗 monk from Nagoya 名古屋. Cognomens include Sankai Murai 三界無賴 and Muisu 無以子. Ekidōʼs father passed away when he was seven, and at age nine he joined the monkhood at Shōōji 聖應寺 in Kutsukake 沓掛, Toyoake 豐明 (Aichi 愛知 prefecture) under Setsudō Gyōrin 雪堂曉林 (d.u.), whose dharma he would later inherit. Around the age of eighteen he studied under Unrin 雲麟 (d.u.) of Reijakuji 靈若寺, Dōkai 道契 (?–1846) of Ōryūji 黃龍寺, and Raiō 來應 (d.u.) of Ryūtaiji 龍泰寺 in Mino 美濃 (Gifu 岐阜 prefecture) before going on to travel around the country. From 1838, he studied for four years under Fūgai Honkō 風外本高 (1779–1847) at Kōjakuji 香積寺 in Asuke 足助, Sanshū 三州, and is said to have realized awakening through his studies of the Śūraṃgama-sūtra 楞嚴經, after which he received certification 印可 from Fūgai. Following, he retreated to Daihisan 大悲山 in Kyoto 京都 and practiced Zen meditation with Hara Tanzan 原坦山 (1819–1892) and others. In 1847 he took over the abbotship of Daitakuji 大宅寺 from Sōun 藏雲 (d.u.), and later became abbot at Ryūkaiin 龍海院 in Maebashi 前橋 (Gunma 群馬 prefecture) and at Tentokuin 天德院 in Kanazawa 金澤 (Ishikawa 石川 prefecture). At the beginning of the Meiji period 明治時代 he was involved in the arguments between Eiheiji 永平寺 and Sōjiji 總持寺 and helped to bring about a truce. In the third year of Meiji (1870) he became the abbot of Sōjiji and was given the title Kōzai Jitoku Zenji 弘濟慈德禪師. In 1880 he passed away aged seventy-five on the twenty-fourth day of the eighth month while visiting Zenpōji 善寶寺 in Ōyama 大山 (Yamagata 山形 prefecture). 〔鐵笛倒吹講話〕 , 〔總持變堂禪師傳〕 [Stefan Grace; source(s): Yokoi, ZGDT]
