Basic Meaning: illustrated sūtra paintings

Senses:

  • An extensive content of a sutra into an abstract pictorial representation, usually portray the Western Paradise, Buddhist netherworld, and/or various stories of Śākyamuni from Buddhist sūtras. These are often done with the aim of helping lay practitioners to better understand the Buddhist doctrines. Also written as 變相. [Ockbae Chun]
