Basic Meaning: Sutra on the Arising of Worlds

Senses:

  • Qishi jing. 10 fascicles, T 24, K 660; trans. by Jñānagupta 闍那崛多 between the 5th and the 20th years of Kaihuang 開皇, Sui dynasty 隋代 (CE 585–600). Nanjō 550; Ono. 2:227d. The discourse explains the structure, conditions, origins, formation, and destruction of the various realms of existence, including the worlds of Jambudvīpa 閻浮洲, Uttarakuru 鬱單越, the worlds of the wheel-turning sage kings 轉輪聖王, the hells 地獄, the worlds of the nāgas 龍 and garuḍas 金翅鳥, asuras 阿修羅, four Brahmā Kings 四天王, Trāyastriṃśa 三十三天, concluding with chapters entitled 鬥戰, 劫住, 世住, and 最勝. There were six variant translations of this sutra, among which four are extant. Aside from this text, the three others are the Qishiyin benjing 起世因本經 (translated in the Sui by Dharmagupta 達磨笈多), the Daloutan jing 大樓炭經 (translated in the Western Jin 西晉 by Fali 法立 and Faju 法炬), and the 18–22nd scrolls of the Dīrghâgama-sūtra 長阿含經 (translated in the Eastern Jin 東晉 by Buddhayaśas 佛陀耶舍 and Zhu Fonian 竺佛念). 〔出三藏記集, 大唐內典錄, 開元釋教錄〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Lancaster]
