Basic Meaning: cognition attained as the transformation of the consciousnesses

Senses:

  • In the Yogâcāra practice scheme of the five stages 五位, when the bodhisattva arrives to the final stage, s/he undergoes a dramatic transformation of consciousness, wherein the four major aspects of consciousness are changed from their afflicted mode of activity, into a pure mode. The store consciousness 阿賴耶識 (ālayavijñāna) is changed into the mirror cognition 大圓鏡智; the manas (seventh) consciousness 末那識 is changed into cognition of equality in nature 平等性智; the sixth consciousness 意識 (manovijñāna) is transmuted into marvelously observing cognition 妙觀察智, and the five sense consciousnesses 前五識 are changed into the cognition of the completion of actions 成所作智.     This means that the function of each becomes purified in the sense that the ālaya, rather than storing impressions, simply reflects them back off; more importantly, the manas, rather than serving as the agitator of selfish tendencies, sees all other beings as equal to itself, and thus cannot continue to support self-centeredness. The thinking mind and the five sense consciousness are able to function without distortion.
