Basic Meaning: Scripture on Past and Present Causes and Effects
Senses:
K 777, T 189; four fascicles. Translation by Guṇabhadra 求那跋陀羅: between the 12th and 20th years of Yuanjia 元嘉, Liu Song dynasty 劉宋 (CE 435–443).1 This is a life story 本生 of the Buddha, being a later and fuller translation of the Xiuxing benqi jing 修行本起經 and the Taiziruiying benqi jing 太子瑞應本起經. It begins with starting with as jātaka story of the Buddha, in which he was a ṛṣi (sage) named Sumati 善慧仙人 at the time of the Samantabhadra-tathāgata. It then tells of the Buddhaʼs descent from Tuṣita Heaven 兜率天, his birth, early studies, his marriage 納妃,his four excursions out of the castle 四門出遊,his renunciation 出家,his practice of austerities 苦行,his overcoming of Māra 降魔,his enlightenment 成道,his first sermon 初轉法輪,his conversion of his first disciples 諸弟子, and his conversion of Mahākāśyapa 大迦葉.
