Basic Meaning: to retire from the temple

Senses:

  • A term used in Chan monasteries 禪院 to denote a chief abbot who has retired from his position as head of the temple. In Japan during the Edo period 江戶時代, the term was also used to refer to monks who had been defrocked. Syn. 退居. 〔百丈淸規 T 2025.48.1111c15〕 [Matthew McMullen]
