透網金鱗

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: the golden fish passes through the net

Senses:

  • This phrase refers to a gong'an 公案 in which Sansheng Huiran 三聖慧然 (d. u.) asks Xuefeng Yicun 雪峰義存 (822–908) what a golden fish uses for food once it has passed through the net. Xuefeng replies that he will tell Sansheng after the latter has come out of the net. This implies that one must go beyond worldly categories and classifications in order to realize the truth. 〔碧巖錄 T 2003.48.184c11〕 [Stefan Grace; source(s): ZGDJT, Yokoi, Nakamura]
