通習氣

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: karmic impressions that function without specific limitations

Senses:

  • This refers to the case where both of the two kinds of hindrances 二障 contain trace energies that are neither actively manifest nor in seed form. Since these energies are strictly of the nature of incapacitation 無堪能性, they are simply called debilitating 麁重. These are contrasted to the specifically functioning karmic impressions 別習氣 that are derived only from the afflictive hindrances, and not from the cognitive hindrances 〔二障義 HBJ 1.793c〕 〔首楞嚴義疏注經 T 1799.39.927c4〕 [Charles Muller]
