通達位

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: stage of insight

Senses:

  • Stage of thorough penetration (Skt. *prativedhâvasthā). The third among the five stages of Yogâcāra practice as outlined by Vasubandhu in his Triṃśikā. Penetration into reality after the completion of the prior stage of applied practices 加行位. Directly after the highest worldly wisdom has been produced, the uncontaminated wisdom 無漏智 is produced. This is also called the path of seeing (or 'seeing' ) 見道 in Abhidharma Buddhism. In this stage, which is reached after one asaṃkhyeya-kalpa 阿僧祇劫 of practice, the bodhisattva gains a limited understanding of the twin doctrines of the nonexistence of a self in either the person 人無我 or phenomena 法無我. The bodhisattva gains direct intuition into the non-duality of phenomena—the principle that both grasper 能取 and grasped 所取 are dependently arisen and empty of intrinsic nature 無自性. In Mahāyāna systems, it is usually considered to be at the time of entry into the first of the ten grounds 十地. 〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.48b13〕 [Charles Muller, Billy Brewster; source(s): Ui, Hirakawa, Nakamura, JEBD]
