Basic Meaning: pilgrimage
Senses:
This term refers in particular to the pilgrimage of the 88 temples in Shikoku (Shikoku hachijū hakka sho (四國八十八ヶ所). The pilgrim is called ohenro-san お遍路さん. On the island of Shikoku, the pilgrim travels in a defined course from one of the 88 temples to the next. During his pilgrimage he asks for the fulfillment of his wishes and recites the mantra namu daishi henjō kongō 南無大師遍昭金剛. The present-day sacred spaces of the 88 temples are the places where the monk Kūkai 空海 (744–835) carried out his own ascetic practices even before he officially became a monk. See also 巡禮. [M. Hosak; source(s): Gakken, Nakamura]
