  • (629–700); also known as 道照, originally from the 河內國 (present-day Osaka Prefecture) area. One of the earliest Japanese Hossō 法相 masters. He was ordained at Gangōji 元興寺, and later traveled to the Tang (653), where he studied Yogâcāra with Xuanzang 玄奘 and Kuiji 窺基. Also, according to the Yuanxiang shishu 元享釋書, he studied Chan Buddhism under a master named Huiman 慧滿. He returned to Japan eight years later (660), establishing the first Hossō transmission, which is called the Asuka transmission 飛鳥傳 or the Southern Temple transmission 南寺傳. According to the Zoku nihongi 續日本紀 he built the Zen Hall at the southeast corner of the Hōkōji temple, and was known as a teacher of Zen. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Yokoi, Iwanami]
