Basic Meaning: Daoxuan
Senses:
(702–760) A Tang-period monk versed in Chan 禪, Vinaya 戒律, and Huayan 華嚴, who was one of the first transmitters of these teachings to Japan, being known as Japan' second Zen patriarch and first Huayan patriarch. His secular name was Wei 衞 and he entered the saṃgha at 大福先寺 in Luoyang 洛陽, where he focused on the study of the Vinaya canon 律藏. He is said to have studied northern Chan Buddhism under the Master Songshan Buzhi 普寂 of Huayansi 華嚴寺, who later traveled to Japan to teach. He traveled to Japan in 736, where he had a student name Gyōhyō 行表 (724-797), who was in turn a teacher of Saichō 最澄.
