  • (1652–1736) A monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 of Japanese Zen. His pseudonym was Mitsuzan 密山, and he was also called Kumokushi 朽木子. He received approval of enlightenment 印可 from Gesshū Sōko 月舟宗胡 (1618–1696) at Daijōji 大乘寺 in Kaga 加賀. He succeeded Shūshin 珠心 (1636–1724) as the twenty-ninth abbot of Daijōji. In 1734 he established Daikokuji 大黑寺 in Kawachi 河內 and became the founder 開山 of Zenshōji 全性寺 in Echigo 越後. His posthumous work is the Tendōjōgo 天童剩語. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): Ui, ZGDJT ]
  • (1663–1729) A monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 of Japanese Zen. His Buddhist name was Inshi 隱之 and he was born in Kanazawa 金澤 to the Fujioka 藤岡 family. At the age of eight, he was sent to Kyoto to study Confucianism under the renowned Kinoshita Jun'an 木下順庵 (1621–1699). When he turned nineteen, he received the precepts from Manzan Dōhaku 卍山道白 at Daijōji 大乘寺, and went to practice under Gesshū Sōko 月舟宗胡 (1618–1696) at Zenjōji 禪定寺 in Yamashiro 山城. In 1686, under Gesshūʼs order, he took the life of itinerant monk 雲水. He first went to Shōsenji 正泉寺 to call upon Tokuō Ryōko 德翁良高 (1649–1709). The following year he stayed at Kichijōji 吉祥寺, where he studied Tendai 天台宗 and Shingon 眞言宗. Later he had practiced under several Ōbaku school 黃檗宗 masters, such as Duzhan Xingying 獨湛性瑩 (1628–1706), Dokushō Jōen 獨照性圓 (1617–1694), Egoku Dōmyō 慧極道明 (1631–1721), and Chōon Dōkai 潮音道海 (1628–1695), among others. He also called upon Bankei Yōtaku 盤珪永琢 (1622–1693) and Dokuan Genkō 獨菴玄光 (1630–1698). In 1696, he succeeded Manzan Dōhaku (1635–1714) as abbot of Daijōji 大乘寺. In 1704, he became the abbot of Tōshōji 東昌寺. In 1718, he was asked to serve as founder 開山 of the recently restored Zuikōji 瑞光寺. In 1725, he moved to reside at Myōōji 妙應寺, where he passed away four years later at the age of sixty-seven. He wrote the Zuikō Inshi oshō goroku 瑞光隱之和向語錄 (two fascicles).
