Basic Meaning: Dharmatrāta

Senses:

  • Lin Li-Kouang (1949: 314–351) made a detailed analysis of the works attributed to Dharmatrāta and the references to him in other works, etc. He concludes that there are three successive Dharmatrātas in the literary history of Buddhism. [Nyanatusita, Charles Muller]
  • (2 c.; also interpreted as Dharmatāra or Dharmatara) A Sarvâstivāda 說一切有部 scholar of the Dārṣṭāntika branch, considered an inheritor of the tradition of Vasumitra 世友 and Ghoṣa 瞿沙, who wrote a commentary on the Udānavarga (出曜經, T 212). His name is also transcribed as 達摩多羅, 曇摩多羅, 達磨憺邏多, and translated as 法救. He taught that all things in the three worlds were truly existent and distinct from each other. In the Abhidharma-mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra 大毘婆沙論 he is named as one of the four masters of the Sarvâstivāda school 四大論師 and as one of the four great masters of the Vibhāṣā council 婆沙會四大論師.   • (4 c.) Dharmatrāta, also written as 達摩呾邏多 and translated as 法救. Another Sarvâstivāda scholar, named in the Fahua xuanyi shiqian 法華玄義釋籤 as 達磨鬱多羅, translated as 法尙. From Puruṣapura 布路沙布邏 in Gandhāra 健馱邏國. He lived north of Puṣkarāvatī 布色羯邏伐底, and is attributed with the authorship of the *Saṃyuktâbhidharma-hṛdaya-śāstra 雜阿毘曇心論 and commentator of the Pañcavastuka of Vasumitra (五事毘婆沙論, T 1555).   • (5 c.) Dharmatrāta, yet another Sarvâstivāda scholar, known as a teacher of meditation. According to the Chu sanzang jiji 出三藏記集, he disseminated great vehicle meditation 大乘禪 in the Kashmir 罽賓 region together with Buddhasena 佛大先, with whom he collaborated in the writing of the Sutra of the Meditation Taught by Dharmatrāta 達磨多羅禪經 (T 618). 〔達磨多羅禪經, 出三藏記集〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): FGD]
  • The Fo Guang Dictionary further contains two detailed items for monks under this term with the Pāli name Dhammapāla, also written as 達磨波羅.
