  • (964–1032) Song Dynasty Tiantai monk. Originally from Linhai 臨海 in Taizhou 台州 (presently Ninghai 寧海 in Zhejiang 浙江), with the secular name Ye and the style Zhibai 知白. Left home at 18 and was fully ordained at 20 at the Chanlinsi 禪林寺. He first studied the Vinaya, and then undertook the study of Tiantai doctrines, first under Yitong 義通 of Baoyunsi 寶雲寺 and then under Zhili 知禮, the main formulator of the tradition of the Mountain Lineage 山家派. After Yitongʼs death, he took over his position as lecturer, expounding on the Lotus Sutra 法華經, Vimalakīrti-sūtra 維摩經, Nirvana Sutra 涅槃經, Suvarṇaprabhāsa-sūtra 金光明經 and so forth. He also became a devout practitioner of Pure Land, both teaching and practicing recitation of the Buddhaʼs name 念佛. During the great drought of the year 1000, his prayers are said to have brought rain. He later moved to Tianzhusi 天竺寺 near Hangzhou (Kōs! and propagated both Tiantai and Pure Land teachings. Emperor Zhenzong 眞宗 awarded him the name Ciyun 慈雲. Zunshi successfully petitioned the Emperor to have Zhiyiʼs writings included in the canon. He left behind many writings. 〔釋門正統, 鐔津文集, 佛祖統紀, 佛祖歷代通載, 四明尊者教行錄, 釋氏稽古略〕 [Charles Muller; source(s): JEBD, FGD]
