遺教經

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Sutra of the Deathbed Injunction

Senses:

  • 1 fasc.; T 389. translated by Kumārajīva 鳩摩羅什. Also known by the titles of 佛垂般涅槃略說教誡經, 遺經, 佛臨涅槃略誡經, 略說教誡經, and 佛遺教經. A sutra understood to have been delivered by the Buddha as he was approaching his death, wherein he instructs his disciples, after his death, to uphold the precepts, guard the five senses, lessen the desires, seek equanimity, and cultivate concentration and wisdom. He concludes by declaring the Dharma-body 法身 of the tathāgata to be eternal, and teaches the practice of great compassion. The text was widely read in East Asia, especially in the meditation school 禪宗, where it became known as one of the three patriarchal scriptures 佛祖三經. This text has generated a considerable amount of secondary literature, beginning with Chinese commentaries in the Buddhist Canon, such as T 1529 or T 1820.
