都文

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: head steward

Senses:

  • Also written 都聞. A no-longer extant position in a Chan/Seon/Zen temple, usually said to be between the prior 都寺 and the comptroller 監寺. In some cases, such as described in the Chanlin beiyong qinggui 禪林備用淸規 and the Nanzenji shingi 南禪寺淸規, however, the head steward occupies the highest position, above the prior. Cf. 六知事. 〔禪林象器箋五、職位門〕 [Stefan Grace; source(s): ZGDJT, Yokoi, FGD]
