Inference (Skt. pramāṇa; Tib. tshad ma). Correct cognition. The method of cognition, sequence of cognition, basis of cognition, basis of consciousness. [Stephen Hodge, Charles Muller]
In Buddhist logic 因明, since Dignāga 陳那, it was held that there were only two valid sources of knowledge: direct perception (pratyakṣa, 現量) and logical inference (anumāna, 比量). Prior to Dignāga, Buddhists also accepted Scripture (buddhavacana) as a valid source of knowledge (śabda-pramāṇa 聲量, 聖教量), but afterwards all pramāṇas other than perception and inference were rejected. Various Hindu schools proposed a variety of additional pramāṇas, including traditional teachings of the sages (āpta-pramāṇa, 聖教量), analogy or comparison 譬喩量, absence 無體, etc. Dignāga also introduced important innovations for the construction of logical inferences and the detection of fallacies. Mistaken inference is 非量. See also sādhana 能立, as well as 三量 and 五量. [Dan Lusthaus]
Standard, norm, level. Proof, evidence (Skt. pramānya). The basis of the teachings. [Charles Muller]
Amount, extent, limit (Skt. mātrayā, mita). [Charles Muller]
