Senses:

  • (1579–1655). An early Edo-period 江戶時代 monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗. From a military family in Mikawa Province, he fought for Tokugawa Ieyasu 德川家康 at the battle of Sekigahara 關ケ原 before taking the tonsure in 1620. He wrote several works, including the Roankyō 驢鞍橋, Mōanjō 盲安杖, Ninin bikuni 二人比丘尼, Refuting Christianity 破吉利支丹, and Inga monogatari 因果物語. [Matthew McMullen; source(s): Iwanami, Yokoi]
