Basic Meaning: Zhenzhou
Senses:
A region in Zhengding county 正定縣 in the west of Hebei 河北 province. Zengaku daijiten (Komazawa U.) gives more information about the name of the region during different historical periods. Because there was an important transportation route (running from Beijing 北京 through to Shanxi 山西 and Henan 河南) passing through this region, it has been considered militarily important since ancient times. Linji Yixuan 臨濟義玄 (d. 866-7) founded Linjiyuan 臨濟院 here during the Tang period 唐代, and it was here that the Linji school 臨濟宗 of Chan developed and grew. Zhenzhou is also home to several temples founded by dharma heirs to Linji, such as Sanshengyuan 三聖院, founded by Huiran 慧然 (n.d.), and Baoshousi 寶壽寺, founded by Baoshou Zhao 寶壽沼 (n.d.).
