連牀. Platforms used by a group of monks in training for meditation, meals, and sleep, such as those found in the saṃgha halls 僧堂 and meditation halls 禪堂 of Japanese Zen monasteries. Indian Vinaya texts translated into Chinese assume that most monks will have their own individual folding chairs (with wooden frames and rope seats) for sitting in meditation, but they also speak of
'long linked benches,'
i.e. a continuous row of fixed seats that a line of monks can sit on. [Griffith Foulk]
