開導依

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: initiating and guiding support

Senses:

  • Also rendered as 開避法, 開導根, and 等無間依. Chu reconstructs the Sanskrit correlate of the Chinese term as *avakāśadānāśraya. According to Yogâcāra, the third of the three kinds of conditions 三所依 necessary for the production of mental functioning, with the other two being direct causes 因緣依 and auxiliary factors 增上緣依. In the Cheng weishi lun it is identified as 等無間緣依 (T 1585.31.19b26). Various factors go into the production of a cognitive event, and one of these involves the direct influences of the prior mental moment, which creates closely related conditions for the next moment (Skt. samanantara āśrayaḥ; Tib. de ma thag pa'i gnas). In CWSL, fascicle 4, the opening-and-guiding basis is identified with the sense indriya. Later on, in the seventh fascicle of this text, the action of 'initiating and guiding' is associated with the eighth consciousness – the ālayavijñāna 阿賴耶識 – and in particular, the ālayavijñānaʼs capacity for continuing in a 'homogenous series' or 'mostly similar way'  多同類種 (T 1585.31.40b7).There are a few divergent interpretations regarding the precise nature of this kind of condition, discussed in some detail in the entry in the Fo Guang Dictionary. Chu (2014) outlines three divergent interpretations of this condition, respectively, attributed by CWSL commentator Kuiji to Nanda, to Sthiramati, and to Dharmapāla. 〔成唯識論 T 1585.31.21a3
