開敷華王如來

Basic Meaning: Saṃkusumitarāja Tathāgata

Senses:

  • 'Blossoming Flowers King Tathāgata.' The Buddha occupying the southern direction in the center court of the eight-petaled lotus 中臺八葉院 in the Garbhadhātu maṇḍala 胎藏界曼荼羅. Seed syllables: ā, vaṃ. Secret name 密號: pingdeng jin'gang 平等金剛. Yellow in color, his left hand clutches the edge of his kāṣāya 袈裟 in front of his navel. His right hand is the mudrā bestowing fearlessness 施無畏印. He is seated on a jewel lotus 寶蓮華. His mudrā is the lotus añjali 蓮華合掌. His mantra 眞言 is namaḥ samantabuddhānāṃ vaṃ vaḥ svāhā. The Mahāvairocana-sūtra 大日經 ((T 848); fasc. 1) with respect to this Buddha describes the flower of enlightenment 遍覺華 blossoming 開敷, golden color emitting light 金色放光明 and separation from defilements 離諸垢 in samādhi 三昧, which represents the maturation of the seed of bodhicitta 菩提心 and its subsequent blossoming. The Darijing shu 大日經疏 (T 1796; fasc. 4) gives his longer name 'Śāla Tree King Flower Blossoming Buddha'  娑羅樹王花開敷佛. His golden body emitting light is the mark 標相 of abiding in the samādhi separating from defilements 離垢三昧. Separation from defilements here is defined as realization of great emptiness 大空, which is likened to gold refined and completely free of impurities. Corresponds to Ratnasaṃbhava Tathāgata 寶生如來 in the Vajradhātu 金剛界. 〔大日經 T 848.18.36c10〕 [Jeffrey Kotyk]
