阿彌陀經義疏

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Commentary on the Meaning of the Amitâbha Sutra

Senses:

  • T 1761, single fascicle, written by Yuanzhao 元照. A commentary on Kumārajīvaʼs 鳩摩羅什 translation of the Amitâbha Sutra 阿彌陀經.The text consists of four sections, arranged to the teaching , principle , practice , and results . (1) The teaching section is divided into two sections, motivation of teachings 教興 and character of doctrine 教相. The motivation of teachings explains that the Tathāgata manifests in the sahā realm to assist sentient beings with attaining rebirth in the Pure Land 淨土. The character of doctrine argues that the Pure Land teachings should be considered a Mahāyāna teaching on perfect and sudden buddhahood 圓頓成佛. (2) The principle section focuses on the essence , which Yuanzhao argues is the inconceivable merit 不可思議功德 of cultivating causes and resonating results 修因感果 through Amitâbha. (3) The practice section details the myriad practices subsumed in the six perfections 六度萬行 and maintaining the name of Amitâbha 持名. (4) The section on results concerns the function of the teachings, which is to obtain the dharma-nature body 法性身 and abide in a pure land containing both enlightened and unenlightened beings 同居淨土. In other words, the result is to ultimately become a buddha 究竟成佛. [Matthew McMullen; source(s): FGD, Kamata]
