Basic Meaning: abhidharma-piṭaka
Senses:
Canon of philosophical treatises. One of three divisions of the Buddhist canon, consisting of systematic treatises on Buddhist philosophy, generally attributed to the disciples of the Buddha or prominent Buddhist scholars who lived several centuries after the demise of the Buddha, produced within the eighteen (or twenty) early Indian schools of Buddhism prior to the growth of Mahāyāna. The abhidharma texts attempted to resolve philosophical problems that arose in the midst of attempts to explain the details and ostensive logical problems inherent in the Buddhist teaching. For example, by what sort of mechanisms was transmigration, and the attainment of nirvana understood to be possible; what kinds of factors go into conscious experience, etc. In the Pāli canon (小乘論) this includes the seven treatises 七部論, which are equivalent to the six Sarvâstivāda treatises plus the Kathā-vatthu 論事. In the Chinese canon, seven others are included. In the Chinese canon (大乘論), this refers to such categories of texts as the six Sarvâstivāda treatises 六足論, the Jñāna-prasthâna 發智論, the Abhidharma-mahāvibhāṣā-śāstra and other

texts, as well as such Mahāyāna works as the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-śāstra 大智度論, the Daśabhūmika-vibhāṣā 十住毘婆沙論, the Daśabhūmikasūtra-śāstra 十地經論, Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra 瑜伽師地論, Cheng weishi lun 成唯識論, Mahāyānasaṃgraha-śāstra 攝大乘論, Madhyamaka-śāstra 中論, Śata-śāstra
百論, and Dvādaśanikāya-śāstra 十二門論. In the Tibetan canon, the Abhidharma texts are included together with the prajñāpāramitā texts. Transliterated as 阿毘達磨.Also written as 論藏 and 對法藏. See also 三藏
