阿毘達磨藏顯宗論

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Treatise Clarifying the Tenets of the Abhidharma Treasury

Senses:

  • The Apidamozang xianzong lun; *Abhidharma-samayapradīpikā, *Abhidharma-piṭaka-prakaraṇa-śāsana-śāstra or *Abhidharmakośa-śāstra-kārikā-vibhāṣya; 40 fascicles, T 1563.29.777-end. By Saṃghabhadra 衆賢, translated by Xuanzang 玄奘 during 651–652. This and the Nyāyânusāra (阿毘達磨順正理論) are two voluminous Abhidharmic commentaries by Saṃghabhadra (a younger Sarvâstivādin 有部 contemporary of Vasubandhu 世親) translated by Xuanzang, framed as commentaries on Vasubandhuʼs Abhidharmakośa (倶舍論) from an orthodox Sarvâstivādin position. See Cox 1997: 242, n. 308 for an in-depth discussion of the various Sanskrit reconstructions of the title of this Sanskritic treatise.

While a work that has been mis-catalogued as a Tibetan translation of the Treatise Revealing the Tenets of the Abhidharma Treasury by Saṃghabhadra exists in the Derge canon under the title, Commentary on the Verses of the Abhidharma Treasury (Chos mngon pa mdzod kyi bstan bcos kyi tshig le'ur byas pa'i rnam par bshad pa, D no. 4091, vol. 141), Mejor (1991, 37) has found that it appears to be 'a simple abridgement of the Abhidharmakośa, without polemics.' Mejor identifies D 4091as the *Abhidharmakośa-vṛtti sūtrānurūpā, based upon correspondences with a fragmentary Tibetan manuscript from Dunhuang (Stein No. 591). Mejor (1991, 36) thus summarizes the contents of D4091: "It seems that we have here an example of an old, anonymous translation of an Indian text of a śāstra-commentary type, very early incorporated into the Tanjur and not subject to further revision or correction." Brewster (2020) studies the teachings on the survivability of biological death by the psycho-physical continuum laid out in Xuanzangʼs 40-fascicle translation of Saṃghabhadraʼs Treatise Revealing the Tenets of the Abhidharma Treasury.
