Basic Meaning: Ārāḍa Kālāma
Senses:
Skt. Āḷāra Kālāma; see also 阿羅羅伽羅摩. Also transcribed as 阿邏荼迦邏摩, 阿藍迦藍, 阿羅羅迦羅羅, 阿羅迦羅摩, 阿羅遊蘭, 阿蘭迦蘭, 迦蘭仙人 , and 阿蘭迦. Translated as 解怠. A hermit sage whom Śākyamuni called on soon after renouncing the world, asking about the essentials of practice. He is said to have been a Sāṃkhya 數論 adherent and to have lived near Vaiśālī 毘舍離城. He is one of the two teachers to whom Śākyamuni Buddha went before reaching awakening, and is said to have taught the attainment of the sphere of nothingness 無所有處, cf. T 26.1.776b8.
