Basic Meaning: Trần Nhân Tông
Senses:
(1258–1308) The third king of the Trần 陳 Dynasty of Đại Việt 大越 in Vietnam, also called Tuệ Quang 慧光. During his reign Khubilai Khan 忽必烈可汗 attempted two failed invasions of Đại Việt. In 1293, he abdicated and became a monk, carrying the title Trúc Lâm đại sĩ 竹林大士. He founded the indigenous Vietnamese Thiền 禪宗 school called Trúc Lâm Yên Tử 竹林安子, which incorporated the philosophies of the Chinese Linji school 臨濟宗 and Chan schools founded by Chinese monks Wu Yantong 無言通 and Cao Tang 草堂. Among his writings are the 禪心切椊語錄, 禪宗旨南, 課虛集, 金剛經疏, 禪林鐵嘴錄 and so forth. [Siang Kim Chia; source(s): FGD]
