Basic Meaning: obstructive resistance
Senses:
(Skt. āvaraṇa-pratighāta) The first of three types of resistance 三有對 (sapratigha) in Sarvâstivāda 說部 teaching—namely, the physical resistance between one of the five types of physical sense object and the non-corresponding type of sense faculty, e.g., the resistance between visual form 色 (rūpa) and auditory faculty 耳根, or between sound 聲 and visual faculty 眼根. In his Abhidharmakośabhāṣya 倶舍論, Vasubandhu 世親 likens this type of resistance to
'hand blocking hand,'
or
'stone blocking stone.'
The existence of a stone in a certain spatio-temporal locus impedes the arising of other stones at the same moment in time in the same spatio-temporal locus. See Pradhan 1967, 19.
