Basic Meaning: Yunyan sweeps the ground
Senses:
This phrase is a reference to the gong'an 公案 in which Yunyan Tansheng 雲巖曇晟 (782–841) is interrupted by an interlocutor monk while sweeping the ground. Yunyan is asked if he is tired and he replies,
"Not at all"
. The monk again questions,
"If not, is there a second moon?"
Yunyan replies, while raising up his broom,
"What moon is this?"
This implies that everyday tasks such as cleaning are not separate from oneʼs practice of the Way.
