  • (d. 1396) A monk of the Sōichi branch 聖一派 of the Rinzai school 臨濟宗. He was a native of Shinano 信濃 (Nagano prefecture). His secular surname was Tachibana , his Buddhist name was Shōkai 性海, and he was also called Sakumu 昨夢, Fugenshi 不還子, and Wai'u 煨芋. At the age of eleven, he took residence at Kenchōji 建長寺 (in Kamakura). Next, he traveled to Kyoto to practice under Qingzhuo Zhengcheng 淸拙正澄 (J. Shōsetsu Shōchō) at Kenninji 建仁寺. Later he practiced for many years under Kokan Shiren 虎關師鍊 at Nanzenji 南禪寺, from whom he received dharma transmission. In 1343, he traveled to Yuan 元代 China, where he practiced under several masters, including Konghai Liangnian 空海良念(d.u.) of Tianningsi 天寧寺, Yuejiang Zhengyin 月江正印 (d.u.), Jixiu Qile 卽休契了 (1269–1351), and Zhuyuan Zhengyuan 竺遠正源 (1290–1361). Upon his return to Japan in 1347, he settled in Mt. Yaku 藥山, Tanba 丹波 (Hyōgo prefecture), where he founded Chōjuan 長壽庵, Zenkyoan 禪居庵, and Kōshōan 興勝庵. Later he was invited by the Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu 足利義滿 (1358–1408) to serve as abbot of Sanshōji 三聖寺 (in Kyoto). During his career, he served as abbot of several major Zen temples, including Tōfukuji 東福寺, Tenryūji 天龍寺, and Nanzenji, among others. In his later years, he retired to Taikōan 退耕庵. In 1383, he was again invited by Ashikaga Yoshimitsu to serve as abbot of Jōzaikōji 常在光寺; however, he returned to Taikōan the same year. He is considered a prominent figure within the Five Mountains 五山 literary world. His works include the Ishibyō shū 石屛集 and Ishibyō shūyui 石屛拾遺. [Erez Joskovich, Griffith Foulk; source(s): Ui, ZGDJT]
