靈辯

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Lingbian

Senses:

  • (477–522) Monk of the Northern Wei, from Taiyuan 太原 (in modern-day Shanxi Prefecture 山西). He became a monk at an early age, apparently having a deep interest in the Huayan jing 華嚴經, upon which he resolved to write a commentary. He later entered Qingliangsi 淸涼寺 on Wutai shan 五臺山, where, in 516, he began his commentarial project. The following year he moved to Songyansi 嵩巖寺 of Xuandui shan 玄兌山, and he completed his commentary, entitled Huayanjing lun 華嚴經論, in 520, in 100 fascicles. During the period that he was working on this commentary, he was invited by members of the family of the emperor Xiao Mingdi 孝明帝 to come to court to lecture on the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra 大品般若 and other works. He passed away at Rongjuesi 融覺寺 at the age of 46. The commentary, which is the earliest extant exegesis of the Huayan jing, was edited by his disciples Daochang 道昶, Lingyuan 靈源, Tanxian 曇現, et. al., but it disappeared until its re-emergence in 683 at Zhixiangsi 至相寺 in Zhongnanshan 終南山. Unfortunately, only twelve fascicles are extant. The contents of this commentary show the active state of 'philosophy of mind' of the period, as Lingbian discusses various theories of the structure of the mind that show the current mixture of ideas regarding its fundamental degree of defilement or purity. He provides various analyses that reflect views about the mind that would appear in the Laṅkâvatāra-sūtra, Awakening of Mahāyāna Faith, as well as ideas of the immortality of the soul that had been promulgated earlier by such thinkers as Zongbing 宗炳 (in his Mingfolun 明佛論).
