Basic Meaning: Jingsong
Senses:
Sui period Chinese monk, a member of the Shelun 攝論 circle of studies. He is said to have been ordained at fifteen, after which he engaged himself in the study of such texts as the Nirvana Sutra 涅槃經, Daśabhūmika-sūtra 十地經論, the Four Part Vinaya 四分律, *Saṃyuktâbhidharma-hṛdaya-śāstra 雜阿毘曇心論 and Satyasiddhi-śāstra 成實論. Originally from the north, he fled from the Northern Zhou persecution of Buddhism in 577, and during his time in Jinling 金陵 (mod. Nanjing), became a disciple of Fatai 法泰 (d. after 577), in his turn a prominent disciple of Paramârtha 眞諦 (499–569). Under Fataiʼs tutelage, Jingsong because acquainted with the Mahāyāna-saṃgraha 攝大乘論 (after which the Shelun school is named). Jingsong left Jinling in 590 and went to Pengcheng 彭城, where he was installed in the newly renamed Chongshengsi 崇聖寺. Among Jingsongʼs notable disciples were Zhining 智凝 (c.563-c.610) and Daoji 道基 (577–637).1 His biography is found at Xu gaoseng zhuan
