Basic Meaning: conducive to liberation
Senses:
This is the Chinese translation of the Sanskrit word mokṣa-bhāgīya, or
'connected-with-liberation,'
an adjectival karmadhāraya 持業釋 compound referring to the wholesome faculties conducive to liberation 解脫 (mokṣa). The Chinese translation literally means
'the parts conducive to liberation.'
The parts conducive to liberation indicate the wholesome faculties, the implementation of which in practice engenders wholesome thoughts and behaviors that ultimately bring liberation from the suffering of saṃsāra 生死. This group of faculties includes the five cultivatable spiritual faculties of faith 信根, perseverance 勤根, mindful recollection 念根, concentration 定根, and wisdom 慧根. Sarvāstivāda teaching maintains that these five faculties have the three sources of karma of body 身業, speech 口業, and mind 意業 as their intrinsic nature 自性. These faculties conducive to liberation are cultivated during the stage of preparation 資糧位, the first of the five stages 五位 of the Yogācāra and Abhidharma path of practice. (Tib. thar pa'i cha dang mthun pa).
