Basic Meaning: dhūta

Senses:

  • Transliteration of the Sanskrit, meaning austerities. The original Indic term means literally, 'to cast off,' shake off, cleanse, etc. In this case, what is cast off is afflicted attachments. Thus, these are ascetic practices designed to eliminate oneʼs attachment to food, clothing and shelter (Pāli dhūta, dhuta; Tib. sbyangs pa). There are twelve categories of dhūta practices 十二頭陀行. Also transliterated as 杜多; 杜荼, and rendered as 頭陀行. Translated into Chinese as 修治, 棄除, etc. (Skt. dhuta,*dhūta-guṇa).
