A practice of the Nichiren school, the chanting of the mantra namu myōhō renge kyō 南無妙法蓮華經, or homage to the Lotus Sutra, often expressed honorifically as O-daimoku. There are precedents for this practice before its usage by the Nichiren school, as, for example in the homage to the three treasures in the Lotus Sutra repentance ritual 法華懺法 at Mt. Hiei 比叡山. But its usage as a kind of chanting of the Buddhaʼs name starts with Nichiren. The development of methods of practiced based specifically on Lotus related texts and doctrines starts with Zhiyi 智顗, but it was Nichiren who established these five (or seven) characters as the basis for chanting practice.
