Basic Meaning: fulfillment of vows and practices

Senses:

  • The fulfillment of the vows and the completion of the practices associated with being reborn in Amitâbhaʼs 阿彌陀 Pure Land 淨土. In the Japanese Jōdo school 淨土宗, the practice of the nenbutsu is the fulfillment of both the vow and practice. The recitation of namu 南無 petitions Amitâbha to assist the practitioner and corresponds to the vow. The recitation of amida butsu 阿彌陀佛 is the practice of invoking the name of the Buddha. In the Jōdo Shin school 淨土眞宗, the nenbutsu invokes the forty-eight vows 四十八願 of Amitâbha and constitutes both the vow and practice.
