Basic Meaning: Acclamation of the Holy Teaching
Senses:
Xianyang shengjiao lun; 20 fasc. T 1602.31.480b-583b. One of the seminal treatises of the Yogâcāra tradition. A combination of verse by Asaṅga 無著, commented on by Vasubandhu 世親; translated into Chinese by Xuanzang 玄奘 in 645-646 C.E. at Hongfu Monastery 弘褔寺. It is considered to be a further development of the tradition seen in the Yogâcārabhūmi-śāstra 瑜伽師地論, as it uses the concepts found in that text in a manner that suggests that they have already been accepted. Contained in this treatise are discussions of all the major Yogâcāra topics, such as the eight consciousnesses 八識, three natures 三性, theories of dharmas 百法, etc. Often abbreviated as 顯揚論. Sanskrit and Tibetan versions are not extant. Related texts include T 1579, 1603, and 1617. Schmithausen notes that the title is often provisionally retranslated into Sanskrit as Ārya-deśanā-vikhyapâna as well as Prakaranâryavâca-śāstra, while Mukai Akira suggests Śāsanodbhāvana (against Kudaraʼs Saddharmavyākyāna), and Matsuda Kazunobu Śāsanasphūrti or Śāsanasphuraṇa, based on Tib. bsTan pa la khyab pa, but none of these retranslations are definitively confirmable. Schmithausen (1987), p. 261, note 99. Hirakawa also gives *Ārya-śāsana-prakaraṇa)
