Basic Meaning: Goryeo period
Senses:
An early middle period of Korean history (918–1392), during which Buddhism predominated has the state religion, and Korean Buddhism grew and developed. The most important of the modern forms of Korea, the Jogye school 曹溪宗 of Korean Seon 禪宗, has its roots from this period. Many important Korean monks lived during this period, including Jinul 知訥, Uicheon 義天, Taego 太古, and others. It is also the period during which the famous Korean woodblock canon 高麗大藏經 was carved. This period was also marked by the turbulence of the Mongol invasions, but the dynasty survived intact until its demise in 1392. Corruption that developed within the Buddhist institutional structure was at least in part a cause of the demise of the dynasty, and the succeeding dynasty, the Joseon 朝鮮時代, would end up being ideologically Confucian.
