Basic Meaning: Chronological Biography of Zen Master Jinki Dokumyō, Founder of the Ryūtaku [Temple]
Senses:
Ryūtaku kaiso Jinki Dokumyō Zenshi nenpu; two fascicles. A chronological biography of Hakuin Ekaku 白隱慧鶴 (1686–1769) written by his disciple and dharma heir the eminent historian and literati Tōrei Enji 東嶺園慈 (1721–1792) (Hakuin oshō zenshū, Vol. I, pp. 1–78). This text records the events in the life of Hakuin Ekaku, the most prominent Japanese Rinzai 臨濟宗 master of the Tokugawa era. Ryūtakuji was originally an abandoned temple in Mishima 三嶋 (Shizuoka Prefecture) purchased by Hakuin for Tōrei in 1760. Tōrei had restored the temple and named Hakuin as its founder 開祖. Jinki Dokumyō 神機獨妙 was the posthumous title bestowed upon Hakuin by imperial decree shortly after his death. This text is considered an essential source for the study of Hakuinʼs life.
