Basic Meaning: Longya and the meditation brace
Senses:
Also written 牙過禪板, 翠微禪板, and 翠微過禪版來. This phrase is a reference to the gong'an 公案 in which Longya Judun 龍牙居遁 (835–923) asks Cuiwei Wuxue 翠微無學 (d.u.), disciple of Danxia Tianran 丹霞天然 (739–824), and Linji Yixuan 臨濟義玄 (d. 866–7) about the meaning of the patriarchʼs coming from the west 祖師西來意. In response, Cuiwei hit Longya with a meditation brace 禪板, and Rinzai hit him with a cushion 蒲團. The implication is that the patriarch's coming from the west is symbolic of the ultimate meaning of reality and that such cannot be expressed in words.
