(Skt. samādhi-traya; Pāli tayo samādhī). These are:
- The samādhi of emptiness 空三昧; to free the mind of the ideas of me and mine and suffering, based on oneʼs insight into emptiness.
- The samādhi of no-marks 無相三昧; to be rid of the idea of form, or externals, based on the insight into the emptiness of all phenomena. I.e. the 十相 which are the five senses, and male and female, and the three existences 三有.
- the samādhi of noncontrivance 無願三昧; to be rid of all desires, based on an insight into the emptiness of all things, also termed 無起 and 無作.
There are two modes of each of these three: contaminated 有漏 (called 三三昧), and uncontaminated 無漏 (called 三解脫). A more advanced meditation is called the double three samādhis 重三三昧 in which each term is doubled 空空, 無相無相, 無願無願.
