Basic Meaning: non-duality of the two realms
Senses:
A phrase used in Japanese esoteric Buddhism denoting the non-duality of the Vajradhātu 金剛界 and Garbhadhātu worlds 胎藏界 and their respective maṇḍala. The Vajradhātu is equated with the function of wisdom 智用 and the Garbhadhātu with essence of principle 理體. Because the principle is the essence of wisdom and wisdom is the function of principle, the Vajradhātu and Garbhadhātu are mutually identical. This doctrine is also called the mysterious unification of principle and wisdom 理智冥一. According to Kūkai 空海, this doctrine was first proposed by his master Huiguo 惠果 and became a defining view of the Tōmitsu 東密. In the Taimitsu 台密 tradition, the Susiddhi-kara-sūtra 蘇悉地羯羅經 is added to the Vajradhātu and Garbhadhātu to form the three divisions 三部 of esoteric Buddhism.
