Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: Vibhajya-vādin

Senses:

  • Pāli Vibhajja-vādin. Transliterated as 毘婆闍婆提 and 毘婆闍縛地; also translated as 分別論師, 分別說部. Referring to the school of philosophy that uses analysis to fully exhaust theoretical explanations of the Dharma. The theoretical positions they advocated, such as that the five good roots lack contamination (五根唯無漏說), dependent arising is unconditioned (緣起無爲說), nonretrogression from arhatship (阿羅漢無退說), no intermediate existence in the three realms (三界無中有說) match with the positions of the 化地部 Mahīśāsaka school. They also agreed with some of the positions advocated by other contemporary schools such as the Mahāsāṃghika 大衆部, Ekavyāvahārikas 一說部, Lokôttaravādinaḥs 說出世部 and Kaukkuṭikāḥs 雞胤部, including theories such as the lack of contamination in tathāgatas 一切如來無有漏法, the lack of drowsiness in buddhas 佛無睡眠, original purity of the mind 心性本淨. They were also known by the name Kāśyapīya 飮光部 (associated with Sthavira 上座部) and Prajñāptivadinaḥ 說假部 (associated with Mahāsāṃghika 大衆部). [Charles Muller; source(s): FGD]
