Basic Meaning: the two attachments to self and phenomena
Senses:
The attachment to a self in the person 我執 and the attachment to a self in phenomena 法執. Also written 人法二執 and 生法二執, and abbreviated as 二執. The earlier Buddhist view, usually typified as the view of the Sarvâstivādins 說一切有部, was that all problems arise from an falsely imputed and reified self, called 我執. Later, Mahayanists, typified by Yogâcāras, posited a deeper cause of delusion, that of attachment to the reality of phenomena 法執. In Yogâcāra works, the afflictive hindrances 煩惱障 are said to arise from the former, and the more subtle cognitive hindrances 所知障, from the latter. See also 二障, 二空, 二空智, etc.
