摩訶薩埵

Pronunciations

Basic Meaning: mahāsattva

Senses:

  • Transliteration of the Sanskrit, meaning ' great sentient being.' One with great compassion and energy, who brings salvation to all living beings. Usually simply a term synonymous with bodhisattva 菩薩, but also refers specially to a great bodhisattva (Tib. sems dpa' che; Pāli mahāsatta). In his commentary on the Brahmāʼs Net Sutra, Wonhyo defines a mahāsattva in contrast to a bodhisattva by saying that a bodhisattvaʼs practices are oriented toward self-improvement, while a mahāsattvaʼs practices are oriented toward saving others. Also transcribed as 摩訶薩 and 摩訶刹頭; translated as 大心, 大士, 大衆生, and 大有情. [Charles Muller; source(s): Ui, Nakamura, Soothill, Hirakawa, Yokoi]
