Basic Meaning: Prohibition of Meat and Alcohol.
Senses:
An edict issued by Liang Wudi 梁武帝 (r. 502–549) , probably in Tianjian 天監 18 (519), forbidding meat and alcohol to monastics. This provoked a large debate in the Huaguang Hall 華光殿 of the Huilin Park 華林園, but the upshot of the debate was that the edict was upheld. The edict thus represents an important moment in the history of the institutionalization of monastic vegetarianism (and sobriety?!) in East Asia. See Chen Jinhua 陳金華, “Buddhist Establishments within Liang Wudiʼs Imperial Park,” in The Development and Practice of Humanitarian Buddhism: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, ed. Hsu Mu-tsu, Chen Jinhua and Lori Meeks (Hualien, Taiwan : Tzu Chi University, 2007), 23–24.
