Honmyō (–1758). A monk of the Sōtō school 曹洞宗 of Zen. His dharma name was Ejitsu 慧實, his secular surname was Nyūzan 入山, and he was a native of Shimotsuke 下野 (Tochigi prefecture). In the summer of 1690, he began practicing under Kitahara 北源 (d.u.) of Shintsūin 心通院 (Tochigi prefecture). In 1711, he shared the dais with Unge Enzui 雲外圓瑞 (d.u.) of Kōfukuji 高福寺 in Shimotsuke. The same year he began practicing under Manzan Taisatsu 萬山汰拶 and eventually became his dharma heir. In 1715 he was promoted to the position of preceptor 和尙 at Eiheiji 永平寺 (Fukui prefecture). Next, he resided in Myōeiji 妙英寺 in Arata 新田 (Gunma prefecture). In 1718, he was appointed abbot of Chōrinji 長林寺 in Shimotsuke, a position he held for thirty years. In 1757 he had passed the abbacy to Kenryō 乾梁 and retired. He passed away the following year. [Erez Joskovich; source(s): ZGDJT]
