Basic Meaning: a result

Senses:

  • An effect (Skt. phala; Tib. 'bras bu). Literally, 'fruit,' ; thus, to bear fruit; a result; a necessary; conclusion. To come to fruition. Offspring; result, consequence, effect; reward, retribution; it contrasts with cause, i. e. 因果 cause and effect. The effect by causing a further effect becomes also a cause. The effects of an action or practice; the result aspect of karma (Skt. kārya). In Yogâcāra, effects are seen as having the two general tendencies of being different from their causes 異熟果 (Skt. vipāka) and maintaining sameness 等流. Phala is transliterated as 頗羅.   • An attained state—a level of spiritual attainment that one has reached to as a result of a specific set of prior practices. Thus, enlightenment, awakening, liberation; the 'fruits' of stream-winner 須陀洹果, nonreturner 阿那含果, arhatship 阿羅漢果, Buddhahood 佛果, etc. See 四果. [Charles Muller]
